UNDERSTANDING AUTISM
What is Autism?
Autism is a developmental disorder that appears during the first three years of life and affects a person's ability to communicate and interact with others. It is characterized by certain set of behaviours and is not a mental retardation.
It is a "spectrum disorder" that affects people differently and to varying degrees.

How Autism Can Affect
Everyday Life
People with autism may find it difficult to understand everyday concepts of danger. For example, they may repeatedly touch a hot object despite getting burnt.
They can pick up speech, but are not necessarily able to communicate their needs or feelings. They may repeat phrases and speak about certain subjects that catch their interest, but may find it hard to understand the social rules of conversation.
Some people on the autism spectrum (such as those with Asperger's Syndrome) may have very good or even advanced language skills. but still find the rules of social behaviour challenging.

Other Common Characteristics
Repetitive behaviours
Such as hand flapping, rocking back and forth, spinning in circles, staring at moving objects or arranging things in neat rows.
Sensory sensitivities
They may be more or less sensitive to sounds, touch. light or certain textures.
Social challenges
They may want to form relationships but find it difficult due to limited social understanding.
Unique strengths
Many autistic individuals display exceptional abilities in areas like music, memory. arts or solving puzzles.

With love and care from those who surround them, and with advice and inputs from experts, autistic people can be helped to lead as normal a life as anyone else within their environments.
As they are blissfully unaware of their own autism, it is up to each and every one of us to make the effort towards helping them toward balance and normalcy.

Key Behavioural Signs
People with autism tend to have differences in three broad areas:
Impaired language and communication skills
Delayed language development and difficulty starting or maintaining conversations.
Unusual patterns of thought and physical behaviour
Repetitive movements or routines;
the child may get upset if they are broken.
